Box Office: 'Beauty and the Beast' Waltzes to Record $174.8M in U.S., $357.1M Globally

The Disney live-action fairy tale scored one of the top 10 openings of all time and the biggest ever for a PG title, both in North America and overseas.

Director Bill Condon's Beauty and the Beast opened over the weekend to a monstrous $174.8 million from 4,210 theaters at the North American box office. Overseas, the female-fueled update of the classic 1991 animated musical also dazzled, earning $182.3 million for an elegant global bow of $357.1 million, according to final weekend grosses. That's ahead of Sunday's estimate of $170 million domestically and $350 million globally.

Either way, Beauty set a number of new records, including the biggest start ever for a PG title both in North America and abroad (last year's Finding Dory was the previous champ domestically with $135 million). And it surpassed the $166 million domestic debut of last year's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice to land the top March opening of all time. Just as impressive, the family-friendly movie bested Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million) to boast the sixth-biggest domestic opening for any film, and the biggest outside of summer save for the December 2015 bow of fellow Disney blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens, not accounting for inflation.

Meet the Aerospace Engineer Baker at Maker Faire UK | Make:

One of the most popular shows in the UK has been The Great British Bake Off, a baking competition that has aired since 2010, which gives contestants challenges each week, leading to the selection of the best amateur baker among the lot. Contestants come from all professional backgrounds. Last year, a bright young Derby-based man by the name of Andrew Smyth won the hearts of many with his contagious smile, positive attitude, and engineering-inspired bakes. You see, when Smyth isn’t baking up a storm in the kitchen, he’s an aerospace engineer for Rolls-Royce.

What better place to showcase the intersection of baking and engineering than Maker Faire? On April 1 and 2, Smyth will be a headlining maker at the seventh annual Maker Faire UK, taking place at the Life Science Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne. We spoke with Smyth to learn how he got started, what inspires him, and what Maker Faire UK attendees can expect to see from him.

Game Freak is Recruiting For New Console Game

Two recruitment advertisements have been listed from Pokémon developers Game Freak, specifying work on a console game. The ad opens with "Here's a chance to work on the development of a globally popular RPG!" before going on to say that the employee will be working on "characters, Monsters and Items". Spotted by Siliconera, the vacant position is looking for a Game 3DCG Designer and a Character Model Creator to work on "a title that everyone knows".
Everything but the actual mention of the word Pokémon is undoubtedly pointing towards the popular series.

Last year Pokémon Sun & Moon were released to critical acclaim for the 3DS, which then lead to speculation of a combined version or third entry coming to the Switch; Pokémon Stars. This certainly gives fuel to the rumour that the game is in development, however it's unlikely we'll hear anything until E3 at the earliest. If proven true this would be the first mainline Pokémon game to be featured on a console (outside of Game Boy Player and so on).
What do you think about the recruitment ads? Do you think the Switch will get a mainline Pokémon game?

United States Appeals Court Rules In Nintendo's Favour In Tomita Technologies 3DS Patent Case

It looks as if the saga of Seijiro Tomita's patent case against the Nintendo 3DS is finally coming to an end. The United States Appeals Court has just confirmed that handheld console does not use technology covered in a patent asserted by Tomita Technologies USA, Inc. and Tomita Technologies International, Inc, stating that the 3DS uses technology that is "significantly different" from that covered in the patent.
This marks the end of several years of litigation which began when former Sony staffer Tomita sued Nintendo back in 2013, claiming that he had showed a prototype of his 3D screen technology to Nintendo officials at the company's headquarters in 2003. He stated that Nintendo had used the ideas behind his technology without paying him the proper licence.
Tomita's legal action appeared to have gained results, as in March of 2013 he won his case against Nintendo, settling for $30.2 million in damages. Almost immediately Nintendo went on the offensive, and launched an appeal which saw the case back in court. In April last year, it was ruled by the New York Federal Court that Nintendo had not infringed on Tomita's patent.
This new ruling - by the US Appeals Court - follows a failed attempt by Tomita to enforce a similar patent claim in his native Japan.
